United Kingdom prospective diabetes study follow-up studies establish a legacy effect of therapy for hyperglycemia but not hypertension.

چکیده
In type 2 diabetes, early intervention with intensive glucose control has long-lasting effects, according to 10-year follow-up data on a cohort of patients with type 2 diabetes enrolled in the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS). This was the conclusion of the 10-year follow-up study of the UKPDS, which was presented on September 19, 2008, at the 44th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Rome, Italy.1,2 I attended this meeting, and the UKPDS follow-up data were among the most discussed topics there.

Redox mediating epigenetic changes confer metabolic memories.
It’s not always the case that it’s easy to forgive and forget, particularly when it comes to past memories. The concept of the legacy effect or hyperglycemic memory describes the deferred consequence of antecedent glycemic status on the development of diabetic complications. Anyone researching chronic hyperglycemia appreciates that glucose is still considered the major risk factor implicated in...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS We assessed if early intensive interventions improve the glycemic control and the modifiable cardiovascular diseases risk factors in Romanian patients with newly diagnosed type-2 diabetes during the first year follow-up period. PATIENTS AND METHODS This was an observational, prospective study: 69 subjects were included in the analysis; each of them received intensive multi...

Methods: This study was a prospective uncontrolled longitudinal study. Patients with pulmonary hypertension and vit D d...
متن کاملEarly Treatment with Basal Insulin Glargine in People with Type 2 Diabetes: Lessons from ORIGIN and Other Cardiovascular Trials
UNLABELLED Dysglycemia results from a deficit in first-phase insulin secretion compounded by increased insulin insensitivity, exposing β cells to chronic hyperglycemia and excessive glycemic variability. Initiation of intensive insulin therapy at diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to achieve normoglycemia has been shown to reverse glucotoxicity, resulting in recovery of residual β-cel...
متن کاملBenefits of strict glucose and blood pressure control in type 2 diabetes: lessons from the UK Prospective Diabetes Study.
For decades, the treatment of type 2 diabetes has been based more on assumptions than on facts. Even the most crucial question—does a reduction in blood glucose help to prevent long-term complications—has remained unanswered. Now, 4 reports from the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS)1–4 offer useful information on the benefits of treating hyperglycemia and hypertension in this di...
